Who is Allah?
The One True God – Unique, Eternal, and Perfect
Allah is the name of the One true God, the Creator and Sustainer of all that exists. He is not a concept, a force, or a part of His creation—He is distinct from everything He created, yet He is nearer to us than our own jugular vein. The question “Who is Allah?” goes far beyond curiosity. It is the most important question a human being can ask, because understanding who Allah is gives meaning to our existence.
The Core Belief in Allah
Belief in Allah is the foundation of Islam. It begins with knowing that Allah alone is worthy of worship. He has no partners, no equals, no rivals. He was not born, nor does He give birth. There is nothing like Him.
“Say: He is Allah, [who is] One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.”
— Surah Al-Ikhlas (112:1–4)
This belief includes acknowledging Allah with three essential aspects:
1.
His Lordship (Rububiyyah)
Allah is the sole Creator, Owner, and Controller of the universe. Nothing happens except by His Will. He gives life and causes death. He provides, guides, tests, and judges. No part of existence is independent of Him.
2.
His Right to be Worshipped (Uluhiyyah)
Only Allah deserves to be worshipped. Worship includes not only rituals such as prayer and fasting but also love, fear, hope, trust, and obedience. Calling upon others beside Allah, whether prophets, saints, or idols, is considered a major deviation from this fundamental truth.
3.
His Names and Attributes (Asma wa Sifat)
Allah has Names and Attributes that He has revealed in His Book and through His Messenger. These Names and Attributes are unique and perfect. We affirm them as they are, without changing their meaning, denying them, or comparing them to the creation.
“There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.”
— Surah Ash-Shura (42:11)
Allah is Not Like His Creation
One of the most important aspects of belief in Allah is understanding His transcendence. He is not part of creation, nor is creation part of Him. He is above the heavens, over His Throne, in a manner that befits His Majesty. He hears, sees, knows, and acts—but not like His creation hears, sees, knows, or acts. His Names and Attributes are without flaw or limitation.
The Purpose of Creation
Allah created humanity for one clear purpose: to worship Him alone.
“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”
— Surah Adh-Dhariyat (51:56)
True success lies in recognising Allah’s right to be worshipped, obeying Him, and living in a way that pleases Him. The life of this world is a test, and belief in Allah is the key to eternal success.
Knowing Allah Through His Names
One of the most beautiful ways to draw closer to Allah is by learning and reflecting on His Names and Attributes. Allah has many Names, each of which describes a perfect aspect of who He is. These Names are not mere labels—they are descriptions of His perfection.
“And to Allah belong the best Names, so call upon Him by them…”
— Surah Al-A’raf (7:180)
